The Folklore Museum of Xanthi was established in 1975, is located in the Old City of Xanthi and is housed in the mansion of Kougioumtzoglou family. The foundation acquired, preserved and is studying elements of the modern history of the city. It exhibits material testimonies of the people and of their environment, which contributed in the building of the “personality” of the area.
Here you can find the exhibition “Xanthi 1860-1940, era of prosperity”, with references to the urban class and tobacco trade, the exhibition “Weekdays and holidays” with elements from the agricultural and livestock farming life of Thrace, as well as the exhibition “Enterpreneurship in Xanthi in the beginning of the 20th century – Professionals – Working class”, based on a professional’s guide of 1910-11. Furthermore, in the museum there is a special venue where shows, lectures, concerts, seasonal exhibitions and other educational activities take place.
In the outer part of the museum, there are two turkish baths (hammam), one for men and one for women, and also the church of Agioi Akindynoi, while the whole building operates in general as an exhibit and is really valuable for the city of Xanthi.
